The Weight of Souls
Kacy Jung March 23 - April 15, 2023 Jonathan Carver Moore is proud to present The Weight of Souls, a solo exhibition by San Francisco based artist Kacy Jung. This is Jung's first solo show and it will be on view from March 23 to April 15.
The Weight of Souls is Jung's response to the societal pressure she's received as a woman, an Asian immigrant, and a former scientist. Each of the 10 works, which the artist refers to as photo sculptures, is composed of mixed media and addresses the different stages in the process of empowering, healing, and setting herself free, along with redefining her identity for herself rather than by external expectations.
This series began when Jung started feeling anxious about being middle class and believing that making more money would lead to ultimate happiness. Feeling trapped between having a lucrative job, but ultimately wanting to pursue her career as an artist left Jung feeling unfulfilled and dissatisfied. Created using chiffon, resin and plaster, Jung invites viewers to see the work as a metaphor for the negotiation between society and individuals - how the manipulative nature of social norms in conjunction with expectations often keep people from exploring who they truly are.
Kacy Jung (b. Taiwan) has a MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has been an artist in residence at Headlands Center for the Arts and Ox-Bow School of Art, as well as a studio artist at Root Division. Most recently, Jung was a nominee of the 2022 SECA Art Award at SFMOMA. She has been in several group exhibitions and presented at Untitled Art Fair, de Young, Berkeley Art Museum and SOMArts just to name a few. Jung was also featured in Forbes.
