Living Legacy: Zanele Muholi

Jonathan: "I wish we were in a place in the world where we didn’t have to think about having security or being scared for our lives simply because people don’t like black people or LGBTQI individuals…how are you not afraid when doing this? What keeps you motivated to keep taking these photos and sharing stories without being afraid for yourself and your participants?"

Muholi: "As activists the kind of work we do is about risk taking. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t afraid - I’m afraid but in this instance, visibility is political. For me, it was either you show up or you don’t. Courage has kept me going. I had to do it, I had to use photography as my medium. Others have done it through protests in the streets. Others, like myself, are doing it through other kinds of work."
